Hinoki by Charles Ray (2007)

Hinoki (installation view)

A fallen dead tree on the side of the road would not even be worth remembering for most people, but to artist Charles Ray, this  particular tree was special enough to warrant an extensive process to give it new life. The tree was removed from the location where it had sat decaying for years, cast in its entirety, and sent to master woodworkers in japan to be reproduced. (In Japan there is a tradition of restoring temples, statues etc by carving exact replicas from new wood to replace the old decaying versions.) This old redwood which would soon have decayed entirely back into the earth has been frozen in time, given a new life in Japanese cypress, until hundreds of years in the future when the process of decay will resume.
